The genesis of Novari Health was a recognition by a group of forward-thinking healthcare providers and healthcare administrators that modern software technology could be used to improve patient access to care. They were working in the public healthcare system, which delivers quality care, but often with long wait times. They developed a software system, known today as Novari ATC providing surgeons, their staff and the hospital with a real-time colour coded dashboard of all patients on their wait list. Wait list management by those actually selecting and scheduling patients is often the missing ingredient to improve access to care for patients and to help ensure that patients receive treatment according to mandated timelines. The benefits of this new electronic request for admission (eRFA) system were immediately evident to the surgeons, hospitals and patients. The early hospital adopters benefitted by being able to see what is in their surgical pipeline even before the surgical rooms had submitted scheduling requests for admissions.
This information allowed them to allocate resources like theatre times according to demand and wait times performance. It was a win for everyone. This solution has grown and developed over time and continues to be deployed by hospitals and health districts.
Focusing narrowly on access to care, the natural progression was to develop a web platform which, when integrated with the Novari Access to Care system, would electronically manage the complete patient journey. For example, referrals from primary care for diagnostic imaging, specialist consults, mental health, diabetes, etc. The Novari eRequest® system is also being used to manage post-acute care referrals to include complex continuing care, long term care, palliative care etc. The system is best described as an air traffic control system for healthcare referrals. Completing the platform and spanning the entire patient continuum of care, the Novari Access to Care software platform was expanded to include virtual access for patients to their GP.
Our exclusive focus on access to care has allowed us to become international experts on how patients enter and move through a healthcare system. It has been said and reported that transitions of care from one provider to another are one of the most dangerous periods for patients. Novari’s undivided attention to this important and often neglected area of health care delivery allows us to work with and complement other eHealth solutions like hospital information systems (HIS, PAS), physician office electronic medical records (EMR) and government wait time registries.
Novari started with a bold idea and a belief that well thought out technology could make a positive difference. Today, the company has grown, but our core mission and focus has remained the same. Our growing team includes software architects, database administrators, cloud experts, physicians, past hospital administrators, certified project managers, skilled software developers, testers and system integration experts.
As I reflect on how far we have come with our technology, staff and client base, I’m reminded of what can grow out of a good idea, in the hands of smart people, at the right time.
